Reading15——HE YUNONG (reflexive report)
summary
After this semester of study, I have a deeper understanding of Wikipedia and learned a lot about Wikipedia.
First of all, before learning Wikipedia, I was also a person who had only heard of wikis but could not use them and did not know what Wikipedia is, including Wiki voyage, Wikidata, etc. Since I have never used it, I am very grateful to the professor for letting me Learned about wikis and joined wikis.
Second, I learned that at its core a wiki is a collaborative community whose goal is to build and maintain an encyclopedia covering all branches of human knowledge. It is a community where many volunteers freely and voluntarily share their knowledge; children as young as seven or eight years old, and old people can become wiki volunteers. Another feature of the wiki is that it is free and unpaid, so all Wikipedians work on the wiki not for money, but for love and helping others. The development of the wiki into the top website it is today is inseparable from the efforts of these volunteers.
Third, I learned that the establishment of Wikipedia has experienced a long time and many failures, so it is a great success for Wikipedia to have today's achievements.
Fourth, I learned that wikis belong to Web 2.0. Web 2.0 includes social networking sites, blogs, video sharing sites, etc. They are all sites where anyone can edit and post comments, so Web 2.0 has created modern culture, and each of us can A culture of participation and creation. Therefore, wikis also have the characteristics of Internet 2.0, allowing everyone to edit wikis, but they must be well-founded remarks, and they cannot publish their own biased remarks like social networking sites.
Fifth, I learned that although Wikipedia is an open content community, being open does not mean that all rules can be ignored. The five characteristics of an open content community are: open content, transparency, integrity, non-discrimination, and non-interference. The openness of Wikipedia has both advantages and disadvantages. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, including those without a Wiki account. So this leads to constant vandalism of Wikipedia. Additionally, Wikipedia has liberal and egalitarian values such as freedom of speech and gender equality. Second, Wikipedia's goal is to minimize marginalization and extremism.
Sixth, I also learned that neutral viewpoints and integrity are the tenets of Wikipedia, where "neutral" should not be understood as a description of the encyclopedia, but rather as the wishes and intentions of its contributors.
Seventh, I learned that Wikipedia articles must have reliable sources, and the opinions in the sources should be neutral. Articles should be based on reliable, independent, published sources known for fact-checking and accuracy. This means that we only publish the analyses, views and opinions of reliable authors, not those of Wikipedians who read and interpret the original source for themselves.
In the end, I think the task of editing Wikipedia is very different from traditional student work. Editing Wikipedia makes me feel more fulfilled. The process of creating a new Wikipedia article is like raising children myself As I grow up, I will cherish the article even more. And in Wikipedia, everyone is equal, which makes me feel respected. In Wikipedia, I can dedicate what I know to help others, which also makes me feel more fulfilled. So I hope that more volunteers will join the big family of Wikipedia.
