Reading 12 - Lee Seoyoon
During the semester, as I edited Wikipedia, I gained a deeper understanding of the Wikipedia system. I realized that Wikipedia is not just a static encyclopedia that provides information, but a dynamic community that evolves through the contributions of people from all over the world. At the same time, I learned various editing techniques, guidelines to follow, and the internal evaluation system. In particular, the project emphasizes the encyclopedia's identity and has established clear guidelines for editing. The true nature of Wikipedia, which I had thought was simply a project listing information, brought about a different sense of emotion through the lectures.
Throughout the lectures, my participation in the weekly assignment of editing Wikipedia mainly involved adding references. Apart from creating a few new articles and adding images, all of my edits focused on adding references. I concentrated on adding supporting materials to validate the information in the documents, believing that references are the foundation for the continuity of Wikipedia. As a beginner in Wikipedia editing, I focused on enhancing the project's credibility by adding reference documents that support the content written in the articles. If I couldn't find relevant sources, I made an effort to remove the content to maintain the reliability of the document. Through these efforts, I realized the importance of reference documents that support any information.
Editing Wikipedia is fundamentally different from the tasks I typically perform. Typically, tasks involve expressing my thoughts in essays or creating results with clear guidelines and specific purposes. In contrast, editing Wikipedia requires producing neutral results independent of my subjective thoughts. I believe this is the most significant difference. Furthermore, the choice of which document to edit is also unique to me. While performing the tasks, I could merely improve existing articles, but I could also create new articles, making it my own independent choice without any intervention from others. These task instructions lead to fostering creativity, exert a significant influence, and allow for the discovery and introduction of topics that were previously overlooked. It maximizes motivation for performing the tasks.
Additionally, by engaging in discussions about editing with various people, I developed a sense of cooperation and learned that these conversations take place among individuals spread across the world. Considering that these people bring diverse perspectives, it allows for viewing the subject from different angles and broadens one's horizons. Experiencing the process of finding common ground in arguments through the expression of both positive and negative opinions on specific topics is a challenging experience. I believe it is an advantage of projects in special positions like Wikipedia. When sharing opinions with others during typical tasks, those individuals often have similar ways of thinking due to a similar educational background. Therefore, it is like a blessing to discover such differences.
Throughout this project, I was able to share my knowledge and interests with others who had no preconceptions and engage in various discussions. Moreover, the fact that the series of processes directly contribute to improving the overall quality of the project provided great motivation and left a strong impression on me. Thank you for this semester.
