 1. Summary

Every Wikipedia page should belong to at least one category. Except for discussion pages, redirection pages and user pages, they can be selectively placed in categories where appropriate.

An article should be classified under the most specific branch in the category tree as much as possible, rather than being repeated in the parent category above it. The classification of articles must be verifiable. Classification must also maintain a neutral point of view. The definition characteristics of article topics are the core of article classification.

The central goal of the category system is to provide navigation links to Wikipedia pages in the category hierarchy. After understanding the basic (defined) features of topics, readers can browse and quickly find the set of topic pages defined by these features.

When naming a category, one should be particularly careful and choose its name accurately. 

2. Interesting points

Naming conventions are divided into general conventions and special conventions.

General conventions include: applying standard article naming conventions; Simple and plural problems of category names; Avoid abbreviations; Don't write the category structure in the name.

Special conventions include: when classifying articles, we should pay attention to choosing the right one, because the topic category is singular and the collection category is plural; All WikiProject categories should have "WikiProject" (or "WikiProjects") as part of the name; If it is necessary to prevent confusion with content categories, the categories used for Wikipedia management will be prefixed with the word "Wikipedia" (no colon) and so on.

3. Discussion points

Should the article "Beijing" be placed in "Category:Cities in China" or "Category: Populated places in China"?

    According to an article should be classified as possible under the most specific branch in the category tree, rather than repeated in the parent category above it. So the article "Beijing" should belong to the "Category:Cities in China" .
