In 1999, resig challenged the bono law and handed the case over to the United States Supreme Court, but he received only two dissenting votes from judges Stephen Breyer and John Paul Stevens.

In 2001, Lessig founded creative commons (cc), an alternative "some rights reserved" licensing system for the underlying "all rights reserved" copyright system. 'CC' creates cultural vitality, scientific progress, and business innovation by sharing creative works and convincing ideas. Criticism of this free cultural movement comes from copyright supporters.
