Reading 9: Free-culture movement-CAI XIAOHUA

  (1) Summary

Free-culture movement(自由文化运动):The free-culture movement is a social movement that promotes the freedom to distribute and modify creative works in the form of free content by using the Internet and other forms of media.

(2)Interesting point

The free culture that knowledge sharing represents is also a culture.Culture, conceptually, is an organic whole.Society grows and develops in this culture, from one person to another. It is the interaction and exchange of ideas between people.Freedom culture is a special product of the modern world in which freedom is lacking.

Artists need raw materials.Painters need paints, brushes, and canvas.Sculptors need clay and tools.Digital content editors need digital content, whether it's clip art or sound effects or ready-made genie in video games.Digital media gives people the power to do things that take a group of people to do.In fact, most of us are ambitious. We want to do big projects, and we want to achieve results that are unmatched both visually and audibly. What we want to create is a big world, a tense plot, a work that resonates, but the time energy and skills we have don't match it, and we don't get the results we want. It's knowledge sharing that has saved us once again, with lots of open-copyright art material on Freesound.org, OpenGameArt.org, Openclipart.org, and so on.Through knowledge sharing, artists can use a variety of raw materials that they themselves cannot create to accomplish what they would otherwise not have done. The most amazing thing is that, without investing in it yourself, the raw materials you put online for people to use can be transformed into beautiful works that you never thought of.Much of the music material shared on knowledge sharing is now used in countless albums and video games. Some people will let you know when they use your materials, and there may be far more applications than you know.Sometimes I see your hand-painted logo in software that I've never heard of before. There are even articles for Opensource.com published elsewhere, with references to papers, white papers, or references.

(3)Discussion

What other example can you think of that exemplifies the free-culture movement?

Comments
