 --Summary

Wikimedia Commons (abbreviated as Commons) is a media repository created and maintained by volunteers. It provides a central repository for freely licensed photos, charts, animations, music, spoken text, video clips, and various media that are useful for any Wikimedia project because it is a public project (common resource) that stores media for use by all Wikimedia projects.


--Interesting point

Over the past few years, Wiki Commons has been working to localize or internationalize (aka i18n) most of the text that a user is likely to see on any page. The goal is to display content in the language of the user's choice. The current upload process creates a lot of new text visible on each page, written before the current push for internationalization, and creates all titles and other standard text in the language of the uploader, and since the software supports many different languages, new images are created every day using text in all of these languages. To correct this problem, some automated processes (bots) patrol new uploads, changing the text into code that will automatically display the text in the language of the user's choice.


--Discussion point

For technical reasons, categories should be in English. Unfortunately, users who don't know much English may have a harder time on the Commons. Commons attempts to provide information in multiple languages, but non-English pages are often incomplete or out of date. Also, some things, such as the names of categories, cannot be localized (yet). How to improve this problem is worth thinking about.

  Summary of reading material 1 --HE YUNONG (하우농) 1. Summary After reading these articles, I learned more about Wikipedia. As mentioned in the article, no one would have imagined that Wikipedia could become the top website today. Before I took the course taught, I was also a person who had only heard of wiki but could not use or understand what Wikipedia was, including wiki voyage, wiki data, etc. Because I have never been taught, I am very grateful to the professor for letting me know about wiki and joining wiki.
