Remix culture is a term to describe a society that allows and encourages the creation of new creative works or derivative works of products by combining or editing existing materials. By default, the remix culture will allow for improvements, changes, integration, or otherwise remixing of the work of the creator and copyright holder, with or without permission. While incorporating elements has been a common practice for artists in all fields throughout human history, the growth of proprietary copyright restrictions over the past few decades has been increasingly limited by law.
Creative Commons, which Lessig founded in 2001, released the Creative Commons license as a tool to enable remixing again, as the current default proprietary copyright regime for intellectual property legally prohibits remixing. The culture of mash-ups for cultural works is related to and inspired by the early software movement of free and open source software, which encourages reuse and mash-ups of software works
