1) Summary
One way in which false information can be presented on Wikipedia is in the form of hoax articles, which are articles containing fabricated facts about entities or events that do not exist. While most hoaxes are quickly discovered and have little impact on Wikipedia, a few survive for a long time and are widely cited on the web.
2) Interesting point
Since Wikipedia's editing process is open to most people, anyone can edit articles anonymously. This provides an opportunity for malicious editors to manipulate the content of articles by intentionally inserting false information, misquoting, or distorting facts. The purpose of Wikipedia hoaxes is to document hoaxes on Wikipedia in order to improve our understanding of them and our ability to detect them. According to research findings, automatic classification systems are better at identifying hoaxes on Wikipedia than humans. Automatic classification bots are an excellent tool for maintaining Wikipedia.
3) Discussion
How can the Wikipedia community manage and monitor the editing process to reduce the occurrence of pranks? How should we balance openness to new editors with reducing the risk of malicious edits?
