Reading8: XU RUOCI
1:summary
References to Wikipedia are common in popular culture. Many imitate the openness of Wikipedia, with individuals vandalizing or modifying articles in non-constructive ways. In some cases, Wikipedia is not used as an encyclopedia at all, but more as a character trait or even as a game, and Wikipedia has become culturally significant, with many people viewing the existence of their Wikipedia entry as a status symbol. For example, in a July 2006 episode of the satirical comedy The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert announced the new word 'wikility' for his segment 'The Wørd', which is a portmanteau of the words wiki and reality. Colbert defines wikility as "consensus truth", after Wikipedia's consensus-approved format.
2:Interesting point
Wikipedia has even been used as theatre material. in May 2006, British talk show host Paul O'Grady received a query from an audience member about the information provided on his Wikipedia page, to which he replied, "Wikipedia? Sounds like a skin disease."
3:Discussion
“Andrew Keen's 2007 book The Cult of the Amateur: How Today's Internet is Killing Our Culture asserts that the proliferation of user-generated content on Wikipedia has overshadowed and devalued traditional, higher-quality sources of information.” Do you think Wikipedia has had a negative impact on culture?
