Reading6——HE YUNONG

 1. Summary

Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia is a 2010 book by Joseph M. Reagle Jr. that deals with the topic of Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community.

I think this is an excellent book. From this book, I learned that the core of a wiki is a collaborative community, a community where many volunteers freely and voluntarily share their knowledge; children as young as seven or eight years old Children or old people can become wiki volunteers. And wikis are free and unpaid, so all Wikipedians work on wikis not for money, but for love and helping others. Second, I learned about the history of Wikipedia, its establishment is a long process.

Wikipedia is also an open content community, but open does not mean that all rules can be ignored. I learned from this book the five characteristics of an open content community: open content, transparency, integrity, non-discrimination, and non-interference. Additionally, Wikipedia has liberal and egalitarian values such as freedom of speech and gender equality. Second, Wikipedia's goal is to minimize marginalization and extremism.

I also learned that neutral viewpoints and integrity are the tenets of Wikipedia, where "neutral" should not be understood as a description of the encyclopedia, but rather as the wishes and intentions of its contributors.

2. Interesting points

Interestingly, the title of "benevolent dictator" mentioned in Chapter 6 can only be awarded to those leaders who have exercised caution and continued to make important contributions. An informal benevolent dictator can gently guide the community, mediate internal disputes between those who are well-intentioned, and fend off those who are dishonest. Because mutual aid and mutual struggle are the laws of animal life, Wikipedia, built by thousands of volunteers, of course cannot do without scenes of mutual struggle. At this time, a "benevolent dictator" is needed.

3. Discussion points

What is your opinion on this book? Do you think this is an excellent book that adequately introduces Wikipedia?
