1. Summary

Wikipedia has been at the center of a debate about collaborative content production, with critics like Michael Gorman decrying its impact on learning and knowledge gained through expertise. Criticism and anxiety about Wikipedia are not new, the article explains. The reason is that previous reference work has triggered social anxiety about technological and social change. The debate about inclusion versus deletionism in the normativeness of reference work still exists, but Wikipedia's near-infinite number of pages allows for more lenient coverage. In conclusion reference works can prompt and embody currents of social unease.

The article uses the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle to explain how the principles of neutral point of view and good faith complement each other in the collaborative production of an encyclopedia, using the example of Wikipedia. The article discusses the success of Wikipedia and how it is possible through a collaborative culture that emphasizes positive norms like "Don't Bite the Newcomers" and "Assume Good Faith". The author notes that technology, particularly networking technology and collaborative techniques, plays an important role in enabling openness and accessibility, but is insufficient on its own. Ultimately, the article suggests that Wikipedia's success is due to its collaborative culture, which enables strong collaboration and dampens negative behavior like calling each other names.

2. Interesting point

It was interesting that Wiki already triggered social unrest and recognized that there was a lot to improve. Second, the words of Hunter R. Rawlings III, a classical scholar and former president of Cornell, are impressive. This is because I wonder what the means of "critical judgment" will be.

3. Discussion

What are the means of 'critical judgment' and do you think critical judgment is a positive factor in the development of Wiki?

Comments

  1. Critical judgment begins with an objective perspective, and through the process of identifying whether there is bias or logical errors from various perspectives, a rational conclusion is reached. I believe that critical judgment is an essential element in creating and maintaining Wikipedia articles that comply with the regulations. As Wikipedia is a community that relies entirely on volunteers' contributions, without critical judgment, Wikipedia would soon be embroiled in controversy over bias.
