Reading 7. Kim Jiwon

1. Summary

One of the products of long-standing efforts to democratize knowledge is Wikipedia. The technology and information that Enlightenment thinkers couldn't enjoy in their time are now abundant in ours, and improved communication has brought us closer to a creative and constructive life. The theory that explains the changes in this field is Clay Shirky's "Cognitive Surplus," and one of the examples where this theory is well applied is Wikipedia. However, unfortunately, we are not utilizing it to its full potential. The number of people who take advantage of the opportunities provided is lower than the opportunities themselves, and concerns about bias and lack of reliability in published articles are still problems. To address its own issues, Wikipedia is establishing strict rules.

2. interesting/useful point

Wikipedia is making continuous efforts to address its own inherent problems. However, issues such as biases based on the nationality, language, and preferences of the contributors are not easily resolved. Moreover, the measures being taken to enhance the reliability of Wikipedia articles are becoming increasingly complex, which may make it difficult for new users to follow. While the evolution of rules is a positive development, complex rules may contradict the accessibility, which is the biggest advantage of Wikipedia. In my personal opinion, it is feared that significant progress in reconciling the conflicting factors may be difficult to achieve until outstanding assistive programs are developed.

3. Discussion

Many popular social media platforms and document editors for work these days come equipped with helpful features that make it easy even for beginners to format their content. I would like to recommend the application of such systems for better development of Wikipedia, but since Wikipedia is an experienced site, updating may be quite difficult. In the worst case, it may need to be shut down for a few weeks to perform updates. Would it still be advisable to introduce new features despite the difficulties and potential downtime in updates? Or, Is it still premature to introduce new things?
