Reading 5 --GAO PEIYUN

 1) Summary

Over time, the average quality of Wikipedia articles will rise, but the standard of Wikipedians will rise even faster. Wikipedia and the collaborative way it is produced are at the heart of a heated debate. Indeed, Wikipedia is a model of the reflective character of the open content community. Just as the argument that Wikipedia will never be anything stops, new arguments about its imminent death take its place. However, just as "neutrality" should be understood not as a description of an encyclopedia but as the wishes and intended positions of its contributors, one should appreciate the ideals of universalism, openness and integrity from a similar perspective. Wikipedia's high-minded collaboration ensures accuracy; open edits invite abuse. Beyond inspiration, web technologies and their associated collaborative technologies can enable openness and accessibility, promoting accountability and socialization for newcomers. On wikis, contributors can communicate asynchronously and contribute incrementally. Tasks can be modular. Changes are easy to restore. Accessible documents, discussion pages, templates, and automated tools are further coordinated.

2) Interesting point

The problem with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice. In theory, it can never work. — Zeroeth Law

However, Wikipedia has always been a puzzle. Born almost as a happy accident, growing far beyond anyone’s expectations, and applauded not because it is perfect but because it is confoundingly good, I expect Wikipedia will continue to surprise us.

3)Discussion point

Many reference controversies revolve around the extent to which reference works are seen as normative, that is, in some way condoning their subject and sources. For example, shouldn’t a national dictionary shun popular slang or words borrowed from other languages?
