 1. summarize

Ch.5 - H. G. Wells thought the World Encyclopedia should be more than a repository of information and should be "a clearinghouse of coordination, judgment and misunderstanding." As an example, the chapter took Chapter 3's 'Creation-Evolution Controversy'. wikipedia initially avoided a formal organizational scheme and allowed users to name articles as they saw fit. However, collisions arose when article titles conflicted, and disambiguation pages were created to resolve these conflicts. Naming conventions were also established for qualifying names with parenthetical suffixes. Consensus is a fundamental model for editorial decision-making on Wikipedia, and the community is supposed to discuss and reason together while assuming good faith and using verifiable sources. In this chapter, we talk about the meaning and practice of consensus decision-making in Wikipedia. He also points out that it features the type of leadership "benevolent dictator."

Ch.6 - This chapter talks about "authorial" leadership within the open content community. It is also written about the concept of their leadership through the story of Wales and Sanger. Wales reflected Wikipedia as an interaction of 'patience', 'civility', 'humility', 'willingness to apologize' and 'humor'. Humor, in particular, plays a role in strengthening camaraderie and dispersing anxiety about leadership. However, as Wikipedia grows, people in authoritative positions are said to be less and less likely to try humor. This is because misinterpreted jokes can have harmful consequences. For example, during the 2006 Wikipedia board election, Wales sent a message encouraging voting. The success of Wikipedia is attributed to its collaborative culture and authorial leadership, represented by an informal benevolent dictator who guides the community, mediates disputes and defends against bad faith actors. However, this leadership role requires careful balancing and can be fragile in the face of external threats and philosophical differences within the community.

2. interesting point

The disambiguation pages created to resolve the conflict in the title of the article seems to be very good. It is impressive that it is not just adding functions, but developing them to identify and solve problems, and that this is ongoing. I also felt that there could be an authoritative attitude in a space that anyone can freely use. It was easy to understand by citing examples from each chapter.

3. discussion

Wikipedia has the advantage of being easy to access and can be written by anyone. Do you think a 'leader' is needed in this space?

Comments

  1. I think leadership is needed, and a higher-powered person is needed to limit this behavior in the face of malicious speeches and editors. But leaders' rights need to be limited, or abuse of power will occur.
