1. SUMMARY

It highlighted the vision and technology role of Wikipedia and previous dictionaries in relation to the pursuit of universal encyclopedias. The desire for access to information and global consensus is revealed.

Project Gutenberg is a project started by Michael Hart in 1971, whose goal is to make printed information accessible online. Hart began his work imagining the spread of computers and the provision of free e-books in the future.

The development and evolution of the Interpedia, Nupedia, GNUPedia/GNE, and Wikipedia projects can be seen. Early Internet-based encyclopedia attempts and projects with complex editing processes emerged, but Wikipedia's collaborative and accessible approach gained huge popularity.

2. INTERESTING/USEFUL POINT

1) It was interesting that the story of Project Gutenberg's birth was being portrayed mythically. This unrealistic aspect emphasizes the importance and value of the project.

2) It's interesting that Michael Hart is imagining a time when computers are universally accessible. His vision emphasizes the role and value of computers that can contribute to the spread and sharing of information.

3) It's interesting that Wikipedia has quickly outpaced Nupedia and GNE in terms of popularity and reliability. This shows that Wikipedia has been successful in a more collaborative and accessible way.

3. DISCUSSION

How can the role of technology contribute to realizing this vision of a universal encyclopedia?
