Reading 13. Kim Jiwon
1. Summary
Wikipedia publishes interesting articles on its main page, and one of them is called "Did you know?". "Did you know"(DYK) is not intended for recent news, quizzes, or advertisements. It is created with the purpose of stimulating interest and exploration in new knowledge. To qualify for DYK, an article must meet at least one of the following criteria within the last 7 days: being created, expanded at least fivefold, or promoted to good article status. Like Wikipedia articles, DYK should adhere to rules such as neutrality and accuracy to serve as a platform that offers an extension of new interests to users.
2. interesting/useful point
An interesting point is that I have experienced a similar concept on the Korean "Namuwiki." However, they do not actively use hooks on the main page like DYK. in lieu of that, users there frequently hyperlink words in the articles and express their subjective opinions. It is made possible by less strict regulations, which may compromise objectivity and neutrality, but it has provided an enjoyable journey. If Wikipedia could enhance such features, it would become even more fascinating.
3. Discussion
While English Wikipedia has the condition of "within 7 days," the Korean Wikipedia does not apply stricter criteria. This may be due to the lower number of articles and less new content being generated. Would DYK be helpful in activating such a smaller wiki?
