(1) Summary
Page classification helps users search Wikipedia by classification. Page classification is used to highlight the characteristics of things described in an entry.Pages are categorized, neutral, and follow established rules. Wikipedia has the ability to search by class. For example, if we want to know what sub-disciplines exist under the "physics" category, type "Category: Physics" to get a list of sub-disciplines of physics, such as "classical mechanics," "quantum physics," and "theoretical physics."With this classification, all entries in Wikipedia can be categorized into categories, and Wikipedia displays all categories to which the entry belongs at the bottom of each entry page.Newton, for example, is classified as "British physicist," "Lucas Professor of Mathematics," "Research Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge," "History of Calculus," and even "The Man Who Died in 1727.We click on "Lucas Professor of Mathematics" to get a list of all the people Cambridge has ever taught at "Lucas", including, of course, retired Hawking and Michael Green. This classification information is readable by both the program and the human beings.
(2)Interesting point
Once Wikipedia's names, place names, etc. are structured, their formats can be clearly defined by metadata, and machines and people can use structured data for more precise semantic searches and associations. One example is Wikipedia's infobox. When we search for "Issac Newton" on Wikipedia, at the top right of the page, we see "Newton" infobox, a box of structured information about Newton, such as birth and death, college, teacher, contribution, and influence. On top of this information, a variety of interesting applications can be further developed.A while ago, a student wrote a simple program: pick out all the philosophers in Wikipedia, find out who influenced and influenced others in their infobox, and draw a picture of a circle representing a philosopher. These things are easy to do in today's "information" era, and almost impossible in the previous "library" era.
(3)Discussion
Have you ever tried searching for information by categorizing it?What are the advantages?
