Reading9: XU RUOCI

1, Summary

Free culture is a social movement that promotes the free distribution and modification of others' creative works in the form of free or open content, without compensation or consent from the work's original author, using media forms such as the Internet. The Free Culture Movement was launched in 1998 with the passage of the Copyright Term Extension Act by the U.S. Congress This act extended the term of copyright by twenty years, increasing the original term of copyright protection after the author to seventy years. The founders of Creative Commons spoke at campuses across the United States in 1998, giving birth to the Free Culture Movement.

2, Interesting point

Copyright proponents do not endorse a culture of freedom. The distinguished technologist and musician Jaron Lanier discuss this view of free culture in his 2010 book, You Are Not a Gadget. Lanier's concerns include the depersonalization of crowdsourced anonymous media, such as Wikipedia, and the economic dignity of middle-class creative artists.

3, Discussion

Are free culture and copyright protection completely at odds with each other? If you think so, which side of the argument do you support?
