Reading4——HE YUNONG

  1. Summary

This article revolves around the title of "benevolent dictator," which should only be bestowed upon leaders who have exercised caution and continued to make important contributions, including now wisely exercising authoritarian power.

Because of the open and voluntary nature of Wikipedia, leaders are expected to lead by example, because their leadership is built on exemplary behavior, through action rather than appointment.

An informal benevolent dictator can gently guide the community, mediate internal disputes between those who are well-intentioned, and fend off those who are dishonest.

Second, Wales and Sanger's leadership philosophy and expectations of the community profoundly shaped Wikipedia's direction and culture.

2. Interesting points

I like a quote from Wales:

"I have many faults, but refusal to listen is not really among them. I make mistakes, but I am calm and educable. I try to land in the center on most issues, rather than staking out any sort of extreme positions. And I try to represent all parts of the community’s interest in the broad building of consensus as being better than gang warfare."

I think this sentence can be applied not only to Wikipedia editors, but also to everyone's daily life. Each of us is not perfect, and we all have shortcomings and mistakes, but we must be calm and educated when we encounter problems. Although everyone has had a time when they did not stand in a neutral position due to partiality, we can try to calm ourselves down and think differently so that we can stand in a neutral position.

3. Discussion points

After reading this article, have you learned anything from Wales's own values and behaviors?
