Reading 7--LI MINHUI
1.Summary:
This reading is about reliable sources on Wikipedia. The authority and reliability of information sources are very important. When we usually deliver important news, we always explain the source. If the source of the information cannot be clarified, it may make people make wrong judgments. As an encyclopedia that people all over the world will refer to, Wikipedia will pay more attention to the reliability of content sources. And the management of sources is very strict. If a reliable source for a certain topic cannot be found, Wikipedia will delete articles about him.
Different types of content for articles require different sources. In general, editorial judgments should be made in conjunction with the context. The most reliable sources come from well-established secondary sources, such as reliable academic articles, books, papers, etc. Sources of news events usually include event content and opinion content, and well-known news media will become the first choice for news sources. Ideal sources for medical articles include reputable medical journals, widely recognized textbooks written by experts in a field. Breaking news events usually contain serious errors. As an electronic publication, Wikipedia can add detailed information to the encyclopedia after the events have been concluded. It needs to be authentic and not help spread potential disinformation.
Knowing the reliable sources above, also note that unreliable sources for articles are often websites or publications that are widely considered extremist, have propaganda purposes, or rely heavily on rumors and personal opinions. The rankings of some commercial websites should also be avoided in Wikipedia content due to their variability and lack of authority. Also self-published sources are generally not acceptable, such as blogs, personal websites, social media content, etc. Because such information usually has a strong subjective consciousness. Not to be used as a reliable source.
Sources in Wikipedia articles also sometimes need to be updated, especially in scientific and scholarly fields, as new information and new theories emerge, vocabulary changes, and old sources may become unclear. So more attention is needed to replace valid content and sources on the fly.
Wikipedia requires content that has already been published elsewhere and prohibits original research. Its high threshold for content sources can filter out a lot of useless information, which greatly improves the time utilization rate of the majority of users. At the same time, high-quality content is widely trusted precisely because reliable sources are fully guaranteed. This is also what we need to continue to maintain as volunteers.
2.Interesting points:
Although the content of Wikipedia articles needs to maintain a neutral point of view. However, complete neutrality is not required to be a reliable source. Even non-neutral sources are the best sources of information to support opinions about a field of content. This is something worthy of our attention.
3.Discussion points:
Even though breaking news events may have serious misinformation, Wikipedia, as the most comprehensive encyclopedia, needs to satisfy user searches. So how to filter and edit effective and correct news information in the fastest way?
Wikipedia has attempted to centralize more power in the hands of so-called "admins," who can delete and restore pages that are often manipulated, or lock them down for a period of time to prevent further editing. These changes bring some stability to certain entries.
