Reading 6. Woohyuck CHO

1. SUMMARY

"GIF" is a 2010 book by Jocem M. Wriggle Jr. that deals with Wikipedia and the subject of the Wikipedia community. The book contains ethnographic studies of Wikipedia's history, real life and theoretical pioneers, and culture, including its consensus and cooperative practices. And this book is based on a PhD thesis by Reagle, a scholar specializing in Internet sociology, as well as volunteers in Wikipedia. We are discussing the popular and diverse elements of Wikipedia and why Wikipedia achieved its intended reproduction.

2. INTERESTING/USEFUL POINT

It was interesting to introduce ethnographic studies to explain the nature of Wikipedia, starting with chapter 1 "Nazi and Norms" to chapter 7 "Encylopedic Anxiety". In particular, I felt that the inclusion of concerns about amateurism in Chapter 7, "Encylopedic Anxiety," captured the current Wikipedia problem well.

3. DISCUSSION

Can the theory of Wikipedia at the time of the author of this book be applied to the current Wikipedia?

Comments

  1. It appears that the theory from that time is still applicable today. Even now, the editing activities on Wikipedia are based on the good faith of users. Until the vast amount of information on the internet becomes too overwhelming, or there is a lack of respect among users, this theory will continue to be effective.
