Reading 5: XU RUOCI
1,Summary
On the wiki, contributors can communicate asynchronously and contribute incrementally. When answering questions about the success of Wikipedia, the first response is to focus on technology. Web technologies and their associated collaborative techniques allow for openness and accessibility, further enhancing accountability and the socialisation of newcomers. Wikipedia is successful more because it is highly collaborative than because it is a wiki. wikis and the wikipedia model are one way to achieve strong collaboration, but they are more than just a way. Some also imply that the collaborative approach of wikis can transform business, government or anything really. But Wikipedia proponents argue that individual differences and social bonds have always existed. as Sanger points out, "while collaborative systems should be designed with the needs and values of the participants in mind, I believe that a certain culture or values are necessary to make collaboration work." Wikipedia's status as an encyclopaedia has been debated from the start, with law professor Eric Goldman predicting in 2005 that Wikipedia would 'fail' by 2010 due to shutting down access or flooding it with spam, and repeating this prediction in 2006. There is no doubt that the community will change, but change is inevitable, and like any community, Wikipedia does change. While it has been relatively successful, it has also faced extraordinary growing pains.
2,Interesting point
Commenting on the culture of Wikipedia, the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle is used to explain how neutral views and integrity complement each other in the collaborative production of the encyclopedia. The puzzle pieces must fit together, but in this case they form a whole, like the one seen near the top of each Wikipedia article.
3,Discussion
Despite the current success of the wiki, will Wikipedia go downhill or 'fail' as law professor Eric Goldman once predicted due to social change? And if so, how should it be avoided?
More users should find professional information and develop documents. If you increase your expertise, Wikipedia won't go down.
ReplyDeleteImproving quality. To improve the quality of its content, Wikipedia should strengthen its quality control mechanisms. This can be achieved by raising editorial standards, increasing the number of professional reviewers, and expanding community review and monitoring mechanisms.
